Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence: the philosophical challenges facing “thinking” machines
Main Article Content
Abstract
More than a technological project, Artificial Intelligence (AI) constitutes a philosophical thesis that seeks to explain the phenomenon of intelligence. The design of systems that process information to solve human problems, as computers do, raises fundamental questions about what it means to reason, think, learn, and be conscious. In other words, AI raises discussions that go beyond the technical problems of computer science itself and becomes an object of philosophical discussion. In this article, I will explain what a Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence would consist of, clarifying, first, how this phenomenon is not limited to the field of engineering but is discovered as philosophy; second, that the philosophical approach to AI is divided between cognitive analysis and ethical reflection; and, third, that philosophy should approach AI from a place of suspicion and criticism rather than the speculation of futuristic optimism.
