Abstract

This article reflects on individualism as a characteristic of contemporary subjectivity
and examines its expressions in university students at the Santo Tomás University, Tunja
campus. The analysis is based on an exploratory qualitative study, supported by observations
of university spaces, 25 semi-structured interview records, and a thematic reading of Gilles
Lipovetsky's *The Era of Emptiness*. The thesis argues that the autonomy promoted by
contemporary culture is paradoxical: it expands the possibilities for choice and self
realization, but can intensify dependence on recognition, digital exposure, and the logic of
performance. A dialogue with Lipovetsky, Han, Bauman, Taylor, Rosa, Sennett, Castells,
Levinas, Kant, and Freire allows for an interpretation of the transformation of the relationship
with others and its educational consequences. It concludes that the university must foster
relational autonomy through practices of dialogue, listening, cooperation, responsibility, and
participation in addressing common problems.
