Abstract

Social struggles throughout history have been fundamental in guaranteeing Human Rights in every part of the world. Citizen demonstrations and protests have allowed serious problems to be brought to light and have led to significant changes, such as the Independence of Nations and the establishment of Democracy. However, in Colombia, peaceful marches often turn into violent confrontations when law enforcement intervenes, resulting in many protesters ending up injured, missing, or even dead, while those who are captured are processed and subjected to trials without the minimum procedural guarantees.
The repression of social protests has increased, with laws that limit the right to demonstrate and label protesters as criminals. This has led to arbitrary use of force and the stigmatization of social struggles. The current landscape of social protest in Colombia is concerning, as the State does not adequately protect the rights of citizens who mobilize, raising serious questions about the respect for Human Rights.
